Calabasas Financial Advisor Cybersecurity: What the Regulation S-P Update Means
Calabasas financial advisor cybersecurity got a firm deadline this year. The SEC’s amended Regulation S-P now requires registered advisers and broker-dealers, including smaller firms, to have a written incident response program.
This is an IT overview, not legal or compliance advice. Confirm details with your compliance consultant.
What changed and when
The SEC adopted the amendments in May 2024. Larger entities had to comply by December 3, 2025. Smaller entities, including registered investment advisers with less than $1.5 billion under management, had until June 3, 2026. Many independent and boutique advisers in the 101 corridor fall into that second group.
The four pieces you need
A written incident response program
Policies and procedures to detect, respond to, and recover from unauthorized access to customer information. It should name who does what in the first hour, the first day, and the first week.
Customer notification within 30 days
When sensitive customer information was, or is reasonably likely to have been, accessed without authorization, affected people generally must be told as soon as practicable and no later than 30 days after you become aware of it.
Service provider oversight
Custodians, CRMs, cloud storage, and IT providers must be overseen, and your procedures must require them to notify you within 72 hours of a breach affecting your customers. Keep the contracts and the review notes together.
Records and disposal
Written records showing compliance, and disposal rules that now cover both customer and consumer information. Shredding and drive wiping need a log.

The IT controls behind the policy
- Multi-factor sign-in on email, CRM, custodian portals, and remote access
- Alerts for unusual sign-ins and new mailbox forwarding rules
- Encrypted laptops and phones, with remote wipe
- Backups that are tested, so an incident does not become a data loss
- A simple log of every security event, even false alarms
Remote work and fire season
Many advisers here work partly from home, and the 2018 Woolsey Fire showed how quickly a hillside community can be evacuated. Your response plan should assume the office may be unreachable. Can staff reach client records from a laptop elsewhere, securely? Practice it once a year.
Run a tabletop exercise
Gather your team for 45 minutes and walk through a scenario: an assistant’s mailbox was taken over and sent clients new wiring instructions. Who finds it? Who calls the custodian? Who drafts the customer notice? The gaps you discover are your to-do list.
Local support
Our Calabasas managed IT page explains everyday support, and the service area list shows the rest of our coverage. The SEC’s small entity compliance guide is a helpful plain-language summary. Serving Los Angeles since 1998, we supply the technical evidence your compliance consultant asks for.
Evidence an examiner may ask for
Policies are only half the story. Keep screenshots or reports showing multi-factor sign-in is enforced, a dated record of your last restore test, vendor review notes, and the agenda from your last tabletop exercise. Strong Calabasas financial advisor cybersecurity leaves a paper trail that is easy to hand over, organized by year, so nobody has to rebuild it from memory the week before an exam.
Common questions
Does this apply to state-registered advisers?
The amendments cover SEC-registered advisers, broker-dealers, and certain other firms. State-registered advisers should check California rules with their consultant.
Can our IT provider write the policy?
We can draft the technical sections and run the exercise. Your compliance lead should own the final document.
How do we start?
Book an IT assessment and we will review the controls listed above.
